Backyard Retaining Wall and Stone Steps With a View

Sloped backyards are tough to work with. Without the right structure in place, you end up with erosion, runoff, and a yard that's basically unusable. That's exactly the kind of problem this job was built to solve.

What we put together here is a solid block retaining wall running along the upper yard, paired with a set of stone steps that connect the lower level to the upper tier. The steps are wide, evenly spaced, and built to last - not just functional, but finished in a way that actually looks good. The wall holds back the slope while giving the whole backyard a defined, polished structure.

The rockery fill along the base and behind the wall handles drainage the right way. Loose stone like that lets water move through instead of building up pressure behind the wall. It's one of those details that separates a wall that holds for decades from one that shifts and cracks after a few winters.

From where we were standing on this one, the view over the water made it one of those jobs you don't forget. But beyond the scenery, what stands out is how much more livable the space is now. A yard that was awkward and hard to navigate becomes something you actually want to spend time in.

This is the kind of hardscaping work we do at Bauska and Sons - retaining walls, rockeries, decorative stonework, steps. All of it done with the details that make a real difference in how long it holds and how good it looks.
